fantastical creatures
Happy tidings to our karaoke partners, sweet potato pecan pie bakers, derby hosts, and all-around mighty fine pals.
In other news, I recently borrowed The Very Best from Hallmark from the library. It’s a fascinating (and very silly) read, hosting cards from as far back as the 1930s to 1988, when the book was published. I really enjoyed being able to see such drastic changes in style – and social attitudes. My favorite card from ’56:
Some advice to a working girl who would like to get a man’s salary… get married.
And from ’42:
SORRY YOU’RE SICK COMRADE
Can’t BEAR to be thinking that you’re feeling sickski,
VODKA be ailing you?
STEPPE on it quickski,
Quit STALIN around
And start RUSSIAN instead —
Get better and TROTSKY
RIGHT OUT OF THAT BED!
I almost don’t want to return this book.
